Zhangqian Fm

Period:
Neoproterozoic

Age Interval:
Middle Qingbaikouan (middle Tonian), Qb (60)

Province:
Anhui

Type Locality and Naming

Southernmost Anhui. The Zhangqian Fm was named by Xia Bangdong in 1962. The naming locality is the Zhangqian Village, Xiuning County, Anhui and the reference section is in Jinzipai Village, Qimen County, Anhui Province. Formerly in lower Shangxi Gr, then transferred to upper Shuangqiaoshan Gr.

Synonym: (章前组)

Lithology and Thickness

Lower part of the formation is composed of grey-green phyllitic siltstone, sandy siltstone intercalated with silty phyllite and phyllite. Upper part is green, grey-green phyllite, sandwiched with minor sericite-chlorite-quartz phyllite, and the top has an interbedding of grey and black siltstone alternating with white banded sandstone. The strata contain disseminated magnetite. The exposed recorded thickness is over 2600 m

Lithology Pattern:
Siltstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

No base has been seen

Upper contact

The top is in conformable contact with overlying Banqiao Fm.

Regional extent

Southernmost Anhui and northeast Jiangxi. It is distributed around Qimen of southern Anhui Province.

Age

Some authors attribute the formation to the Neoproterozoic Erathem. This question of its geologic age is pending further investigation. Middle Qingbaikouan (middle Tonian) implied by relative stratigraphic position. [Not on schematic stratigraphic columns.]
